Watch this tutorial video on "How to fell a tree" demonstrated by our arborists at Jireh Tree Service! Tree felling is the process of dropping a standing tree in a predetermined safe zone area. There are many different techniques an arborist can use to fell a tree, the three most common used within the arbor-culture industry consist of the conventional, open face, and humbolt notch. The most common technique however is the conventional cut and it involves 3 cuts consisting of 1 upper cut, 1 lower cut, and 1 horizontal cut. Remember to always wear proper PPE safety equipment when operating a chainsaw and before making any cuts the person operating the chainsaw must predetermine 2 escapes routes in case an accident were to happen. The top cut must be at a downward angle of 45° and a depth of 1/5- 1/4 of the trunk diameter. Next you must make a bottom cut that is a horizontal cut across the trunk and should meet the upper cut to create a wedge of wood you could remove. Final step is to go behind the tree to make the felling cut. This will be another horizontal cut approximately 2 inches higher where the two wedge cuts meet (upper and lower cut). Cut directly across horizontally until there is a hinge with a thickness of no less than 1/10th the diameter of the tree.
