Carpet cleaning is judged by what comes back out of the carpet. Anyone can wet a floor. The difference between a clean carpet and one that looks fine on Tuesday and dull again on Friday is how much soil and how much detergent the machine actually pulled back up.
Hot water extraction, sold to most people as steam cleaning, sprays hot solution into the pile and recovers it with a strong vacuum, usually from a truck mounted unit parked outside. Low moisture methods, including bonnet pads and encapsulation, clean the top of the pile and dry within a couple of hours. Extraction reaches deeper, low moisture is kinder to a working schedule, and the real skill sits before either one: pre-spray, let the chemistry dwell, agitate the pile with a brush, then extract. The pre-spray does the cleaning. The wand only carries it away.
Ask about dry time and airflow, and about what gets left in the fiber, because unrinsed detergent attracts soil and a carpet that resoils in a week was not really rinsed. Ask what the job cannot fix. Worn traffic lanes, bleach spots and urine that reached the pad are damage, not dirt.

Frequently asked questions
Steam cleaning or low moisture?
Extraction, the method usually sold as steam cleaning, rinses the pile properly and is the right call for a carpet that is genuinely dirty. Low moisture cleaning refreshes the surface and is back in service the same day, which is why offices use it. Alternating works well: extraction once in a while, low moisture in between. The method matters less than whether the technician pre-sprays and agitates first.
How long does carpet stay wet afterwards?
A few hours with good airflow, longer in a humid house with the windows shut. Move air across the floor with fans, run the air conditioning to pull moisture out, and keep shoes and pets off until the pile springs back. Carpet that is still damp the next day was over wetted or badly extracted, and damp backing is how a musty smell starts.
Why did the stain come back?
Usually wicking. The spill soaked through to the backing, the surface got cleaned, and as the carpet dried the moisture carried the rest of it back up to the tips. The other cause is detergent residue that was never rinsed, which turns the spot into a magnet for soil. Both are fixable. Call the company back, because a reputable one expects this call.
Can pet odor be cleaned out of carpet?
Surface accidents, yes. Repeat accidents in the same corner, often not, because urine passes through the backing into the pad and sometimes into the subfloor, and a wand on the surface never reaches it. Proper treatment means flooding and extracting the spot, or lifting the carpet to replace the pad and seal the floor. An honest technician tells you which one you are facing.
Is carpet protector worth paying for?
On stairs, hallways and anywhere food travels, yes. Protector coats the fiber so spills sit on top long enough to be blotted rather than soaking straight in, and it makes vacuuming pull more out. It wears off with traffic and gets removed by cleaning, so it is reapplied after a clean, not once forever. On a bedroom nobody walks through, skip it.
