Seasonal Tip: Snow or Ice-Covered Trees After winter storms, you may find that some of your trees or shrubs have been damaged. If they’re still covered in snow or weighed down by ice, it may be difficult to know whether or not they’re safe. Here are the things to look for – and avoid! – after a winter storm: - Safety first! If any of your trees are touching power lines, stay well away. Call the utility company to report it. - If fallen trees or large branches block access to your home or the road, give us a call. - Inspect all your trees (from a safe distance). Look for signs of breakage such as hanging branches, visible cracks, or detached cables, and check to see if your trees are leaning. - Don’t try to knock snow or ice off branches – it could break the branches, or even worse, fall and injure you. - Please do not try to cut ice- or snow-covered branches with a chainsaw! The slippery surfaces and stresses on the tree make this extremely dangerous. - Some trees may be bowed under the weight of snow or ice. Leave them alone – most will recover in spring.
