Just finished up replacing two Andersen windows on a home in Battle Ground. This house was constructed in 1995 and surprisingly had a couple of Andersen windows whose frames were rotting out. Furthermore, the homeowner did not like the fact that the builder had placed a half-moon arched transom in this bedroom as it interfered with the eight-foot ceiling height. The plan was for us to remove and replace the window, filling in the arch with a custom-made cedar sun-burst arch. Well, we started this project with a defined scope of work. However, we quickly found out that not only were the existing window frames rotting, but because there was a lack of house wrap or flashing, the sheathing and framing was rotting out as well. This became problematic regarding the brick siding, which now had to be removed to correct the newly discovered issues. We replaced the rotted framing and sheathing, as well as reinsulated the wall and then placed housewrap over the section and flashed the new window properly. Inside, we filled in the ceiling and retextured the ceiling. In the end, this newly sided section of the home looks beautifully renewed and will last much longer than the 28 years of the original install.
