A custom cabinet shop builds to a drawing. You bring a room, a use and a style; the shop draws it, cuts and assembles the boxes and doors in its workshop, sprays the finish in a booth, then delivers and installs. That covers kitchens, and also islands, pantries, closets, laundry rooms, vanities, built-in bookcases and office walls.
This is woodworking, not a remodel. A cabinet maker is not the trade that moves a sink, reroutes a gas line or swaps in new appliances. You or your general contractor line those up around the cabinet schedule. What the shop owns is the box, the door and the fit.
Ask what the boxes are made of and how the drawer boxes are joined. Ask whether doors are sprayed in a booth or finished in your house, because a booth finish is harder and more even. Ask who takes the final site measurements, how they scribe to walls that are never straight, and how long it runs from signed drawing to install day.

A face frame cabinet carries a wood frame across the front of the box, and the doors sit over it or inside it. Frameless drops that frame, so drawer boxes come out wider and you can reach the full opening. Frameless is less forgiving of out-of-square walls and leans harder on good hardware. Both are sound. The box material and the door fit tell you more about a shop.
Plywood holds screws, shrugs off a leak under the sink and carries a stone top without sagging. Particleboard and MDF sit flatter, cost less and are stable while dry, but once water reaches them they swell and stay swollen. Plenty of good shops mix the two, putting plywood where weight and water live and engineered panel elsewhere. Ask which goes where, and why.
Think in weeks, often months, not days. The drawing and approval take one stretch, the build queue another, and the finish and cure schedule its own. Nothing is cut until you sign the drawing, so slow decisions on doors, color and hardware move the install day back. If a shop promises to start next week, ask what is already on the bench and what is in front of you.
If the boxes are sound and square and the layout works, refacing gives you new doors, new drawer fronts and a skin on the end panels for far less money and mess, and it is done in days. If the layout is wrong, the particleboard has swollen or the drawers are coming apart, you are dressing up a problem. Pull out a drawer and look at the joints before you decide.
By scribing. The installer runs a wider filler or scribe strip against the wall, marks the true shape of the wall onto it, and cuts to that line so the gap closes. The same move handles a floor that falls away and a ceiling that dips toward the crown molding. This is why installation is skilled work and why a shop wants its own crew doing it.
