Tightening connections too much One of the most common mistakes made by DI Yers is over-tightening toilet bolts, pipe fittings, and supply tubes. Applying excessive force can cause galvanized or black pipes, couplers, tees, or elbows to break. Even if the fitting doesn't immediately crack under the pressure, it could still fracture weeks later, potentially leading to flooding. Therefore, it's crucial to have a preliminary plan to assess previous DIY attempts when a client indicates they have tried to fix something themselves. Plastic fittings on supply tubes for faucets and toilets are also frequently over-tightened. In reality, securing a supply tube requires only a modest amount of torque. Over-tightened hex nuts are prone to cracking and leaking over time. Moreover, over-tightening the closet bolts that secure the toilet to the floor, or those between the bowl and tank, can damage the porcelain, leading to cracks.
