Here's why appliances and cabinets should be considered together when planning your kitchen remodel... Unless you're getting custom cabinetry to fit your appliance package, the appliances you choose could cause major headaches when it comes to designing the cabinet layout. Here are some examples: 1. Above fridge cabinets are often only available in 12", 18", and 24" heights. If you have 96" ceilings and you get a 72" tall fridge (which are both common), you might not have enough room to fit a 24" tall cabinet above the fridge and you'll be left with a big gap between the fridge and your 18" tall cabinet. There are ways to fill the gap, but it won't be ideal. 2. If you want a built-in wall oven instead of a slide-in range, the oven cabinets available are usually intended to fit as many different oven sizes as possible, which means you'll likely end up with a lot of trim pieces filling in the gaps. You'll also need to get a cooktop, which often times requires a bigger cutout size than is available in the ideal cabinet for that location. 3. Microwave drawers can be tricky with prefab cabinets as well. The installer will need to make some modifications to the cabinet, and again, you might have some gaps to fill.
