In order to ensure the unrestricted flow of air to and from the soil, layer fine mulch at a depth of between two and three inches, or up to six inches for coarse mulches such as bark chips. To determine how much mulch you will need, first calculate the square footage of the area you wish to cover by multiplying the length of the bed by the width. Next, multiply the square footage by the mulch height to arrive at the total number of cubic feet.
