It provides many benefits including soil insulation, moisture retention, and weed suppression. However, it isn’t a magic bullet and mulch needs to be replaced over time. How often you need to replace mulch depends on several factors, including the type of mulch you use, the soil conditions on your property, and the effects of weathering on the mulch. In general, organic mulches like bark and wood chips decompose more quickly than other types of mulch. For this reason, they need to be replaced more frequently, typically every year or so. Other factors that determine how often you need to replenish mulch include the size of the mulch particles and the amount of rainfall and sun exposure. One of the best ways to decide whether it’s time to replace your mulch is to inspect it at the beginning of spring. If the mulch looks very similar to how it looked when you first laid it down, then it’s probably good for another year. If, on the other hand, you notice that it has degraded down to smaller pieces, then it’s probably time to put down new mulch.
