Overview: Lawn Care Services
Lawn care is grass and nothing else. A lawn crew mows, trims the edges, feeds the turf on a schedule, treats broadleaf weeds and crabgrass, and handles grubs, thatch and thin patches. Beds, patios and planting are a landscape contractor's work, and a good mowing outfit will tell you that rather than take the job.
Most of the result comes from two dull habits. Cut tall and cut often: taking no more than a third of the leaf in one pass keeps roots deep and shades weed seed out, and a sharp blade leaves a clean cut instead of a frayed brown tip. Water long and seldom, because a light sprinkle every day trains roots to sit at the surface where the first hot week kills them.
A treatment program is a separate purchase from mowing. Ask what goes down at each visit, when it goes down, and who holds the pesticide applicator license, since that credential belongs to a trained person and not to a truck.
Listings here carry what each company puts on its own website, its hours, and lines from public reviews. Pick your state, then the city page, which sorts local crews from the ones driving in.
Cost of lawn care
Use the actual grass area, not the total lot size. These comparisons use a 5,000-sq.-ft. lawn, with weekly and every-two-week mowing separated from treatment visits.
| Service or scope | Planning range | What this covers |
|---|---|---|
| Mow, edge, and blow | $40–$75per weekly visit for a 5,000-sq.-ft. lawn | Weekly mowing of 5,000 sq. ft. of accessible, regularly maintained turf, with ordinary trimming, edging and blow-off.Bagging, bed weeding and overgrown first cuts are separate. Ask for the number of visits and all applicable taxes.Included scope and possible extrasScope used for this estimate: Listed mowing and edging; Hard-surface blow-off Outside this estimate: Bagging unless listed; Overgrowth restoration |
| Mowing every two weeks | $60–$85per visit every two weeks | The same 5,000-sq.-ft. maintained lawn and ordinary service checklist, visited every two weeks. The per-visit charge can rise with extra growth even though there are fewer visits. Confirm grass-height surcharges and skipped-visit rules.Included scope and possible extrasScope used for this estimate: Listed mowing and edging; Hard-surface blow-off Outside this estimate: Bagging unless listed; Overgrowth restoration |
| Fertilizer application | $40–$80per specified treatment on a 5,000-sq.-ft. lawn | One fertilizer-only application to a 5,000-sq.-ft. lawn, with product and application included.A fertilizer visit is not automatically weed control, grub treatment or a complete annual plan. Product and timing should suit the lawn.Included scope and possible extrasScope used for this estimate: Specified product; Application labor Outside this estimate: Separate weed treatment; Other plan visits |
| Core aeration | $75–$200per service on a 5,000-sq.-ft. lawn | Core-aerate 5,000 sq. ft. of accessible suitable turf during one scheduled service.Confirm single- or double-pass work and mark irrigation heads and other obstacles. Seed and fertilizer are separate.Included scope and possible extrasScope used for this estimate: Listed aeration service Outside this estimate: Overseeding; Soil correction |
| Aeration and overseeding | $165–$400per 5,000-sq.-ft. aeration-and-seeding visit | Core-aerate and overseed the same 5,000-sq.-ft. lawn with a documented seed specification.Seed type, application rate and aeration passes must be stated. Establishment watering, topdressing and fertilizer may be separate.Included scope and possible extrasScope used for this estimate: Aeration; Specified seed and application Outside this estimate: Watering; Major soil repair |
What changes the price
- Actual lawn area, slope, obstacles, gates, and mowing frequency.
- Bagging, overgrowth, leaf volume, and disposal requirements.
- Treatment products, application count, and contract cancellation terms.
Ask before you book
- How many visits or treatments does the seasonal price include?A monthly rate alone does not define annual spending.
- Are edging, bagging, and cleanup included in each mowing visit?Match the actual maintenance checklist.
- How are skipped visits, weather delays, and extra growth handled?Clarify billing and service when the schedule changes.
Check the scope
Use lawn area rather than total lot area. A seasonal plan should state its visit count and tasks; do not multiply a monthly price across months without service.
Compare quotes wisely
Ask for a scheduled route-day price and compare an itemized seasonal package with only the services your lawn needs.
How to read these estimates
These ranges combine published U.S. prices and cost guidance for the stated work. They are budgeting estimates, not offers from listed companies or a statistical national average. Confirm the total, included work and additional charges in writing.

Frequently asked questions
How short should the grass be cut?
Taller than most people cut it. Set the deck near the top of the range for your grass type and remove no more than a third of the leaf in one pass. Long grass shades the soil, holds moisture and crowds out weed seed that needs light to germinate. Scalping does the opposite and opens the door to crabgrass.
What is in a lawn treatment plan?
A run of visits across the season. Typically a pre-emergent for crabgrass before the soil warms, feeding through the growing months, and broadleaf weed control while weeds are actively up. A grub treatment goes on where grubs are a known local problem, and the fall feed is the heavy one, because it goes to roots rather than top growth. Ask what each visit puts down and what happens if weeds return between calls.
How often should I water the lawn?
Less often, for longer. Grass wants a deep soak that wets the top few inches of soil, then a chance to dry before the next one. A daily light sprinkle keeps roots parked at the surface where a single hot week can kill them. Early morning beats evening, because turf that stays wet overnight grows disease.
Does my lawn need aeration and overseeding?
If the ground is compacted, the turf thins where people walk, or water sits on the surface and runs off, then yes. Core aeration pulls plugs out and gives roots room and air. Seed spread straight afterwards drops into the holes and meets soil, which is the only thing that makes overseeding work. Fall is the usual window for cool-season grass.
Who is allowed to apply weed killer?
A trained applicator holding a state license, working for a business registered to apply pesticides. States generally require a notice posted after a treatment and product information on request. Ask for the license in the technician's name rather than the company's alone, and ask how long children and dogs need to stay off the grass.
