Overview: Pest Control Services

Pest control covers the insects and rodents that move into a house: ants, roaches, spiders, wasps, fleas, bed bugs, mice and rats. The trade is not really about chemicals. It is about working out what you have, where it is getting in and what is feeding it, then closing that off.

A technician who starts spraying before looking around is guessing. A real visit means time in the crawl space, the garage and the pantry, moving the stove, checking under the sink, looking for droppings, rub marks along a wall and gaps where a pipe enters. The plan that follows should name the pest, say how it will be treated and say what you need to fix. Gel bait beats spraying for roaches and ants, because the workers carry it back to the nest. Rodents come down to trapping and sealing, and a mouse fits through a gap the width of a pencil.

Expect follow-up visits: one treatment rarely ends an infestation with an egg stage. Anyone applying pesticides at your house should hold the state license for it, and should tell you what is being used, where, and how long to keep children and pets off the surface.

Cost of Pest Control

Price the identified pest and treatment plan first. A one-time visit, an ongoing general-pest plan and termite or bed-bug work cover different problems; monthly billing does not always mean monthly visits.

Service or scopePlanning rangeWhat this covers
One-time common household pest treatment$150–$450per treatment visitOne scheduled general-pest visit for a limited common household insect problem in accessible areas; confirm the identified pest, treated areas and return-visit terms.Request the complete initial bill, including any service fee, and ask whether a return visit is covered. A one-time treatment is not a year-round guarantee.
Included scope and possible extras

Scope used for this estimate: Assessment of the reported problem; Specified treatment of agreed accessible areas; Initial service charges included in the quoted visit total

Outside this estimate: Termite and bed-bug programs; Structural exclusion work; Severe or specialist infestations

General-pest plan with quarterly visits$350–$600per ongoing year, before the initial treatment feeFour scheduled general-pest treatments over a year for the same home, after any separately charged initial service.Ask for the first-year total, renewal-year total, covered pests and return-visit terms. Compare visit frequency, not billing frequency.
Included scope and possible extras

Scope used for this estimate: Four scheduled treatments for the listed general pests

Outside this estimate: Initial or enrollment charges; Termite and bed-bug programs; Rodent exclusion; Uncovered return visits

Subterranean termite treatment$600–$4,000per specified treatment projectLiquid treatment of an accessible 200-linear-foot foundation perimeter after inspection. This is an illustration for a 200-ft perimeter. Drilling, inaccessible areas and structural repairs can add cost. Annual renewal is separate.
Included scope and possible extras

Scope used for this estimate: Inspection; Specified perimeter treatment; Written treatment record

Outside this estimate: Wood repairs; Annual renewal; Unplanned slab drilling

Rodent exclusion package$600–$2,000per inspected home and listed openingsA defined rodent-removal and minor-entry-sealing plan after inspection, with trapping or monitoring visits listed.Roof or siding repairs, contaminated-insulation removal and full attic restoration are separate.

What changes the price

  • Pest identification, infestation extent and treatment method
  • Property size, entry points and access
  • Follow-up visits, renewal fees and guarantee exclusions

Ask before you book

  • Which pest and areas are covered, and how many follow-up visits are included?Different treatment scopes cannot be compared by the first visit price.
  • Does the guarantee cover retreatment, damage repair, or both, and what is the renewal cost?A retreatment promise is different from repair coverage.
  • What preparation must I complete, and what charges apply if treatment must be rescheduled?Preparation and access can affect completion and repeat visits.

Check the scope

A general-pest subscription does not automatically cover termites, bed bugs or rodent exclusion. Compare the written pest list, follow-up terms and full contract cost.

Compare quotes wisely

Request a targeted plan for the confirmed pest and ask whether a one-time treatment is suitable before committing to recurring service.

How to read these estimates

These ranges combine published U.S. prices and cost guidance for the stated work. They are budgeting estimates, not offers from listed companies or a statistical national average. Confirm the total, included work and additional charges in writing.

Frequently asked questions

What should happen on the first visit?

An inspection before any product comes out of the truck. The technician should identify the pest, find how it is getting in, look at moisture, food and clutter that support it, and then explain the plan. If the first thing you see is a sprayer working the baseboards, you are paying for a ritual rather than a fix.

Is a regular spraying schedule necessary?

Usually not as sold. Integrated pest management means monitoring, exclusion and targeted treatment where there is evidence, instead of blanket spraying on a calendar. Quarterly visits can be reasonable in a house with real pressure from outside, but the value is in the inspection each time, not in coating the baseboards again.

Bait or spray?

For ants and roaches, bait. Workers take it back and it reaches the nest, which spraying never does, and heavy spraying can even split a colony into several. Sprays have their place on a wasp nest, on a perimeter band outside, or on a surface an insect must cross. Ask which is being used and why.

Do I need a termite inspection when buying a house?

In most of the country, yes, and lenders often require one. The inspection covers termites and other wood-destroying insects, and it is separate from the general home inspection. Ask for the report itself, not a verbal all clear, and read what it says about conducive conditions such as soil contact and damp crawl spaces.

Is treatment safe with children and pets?

It can be, with a technician who tells you exactly what is going down and where. Ask for the product label and the re-entry time, keep pets off treated surfaces until things are dry, and cover fish tanks. Bait stations in cabinets and wall voids are usually a safer route than broadcast spraying indoors.

How do I prepare the house before treatment?

Follow the prep sheet, because treatment fails without it. Roach work means emptying cabinets and cleaning grease. Bed bug work means laundering on hot and bagging, with furniture pulled off the walls. Flea work means vacuuming everything first. For rodents, get food into sealed containers and clear the clutter they nest in.
