The Importance of Water Chemistry! It’s our belief that water chemistry is easily the most neglected maintenance item with swimming pools and spas. I think there’s a few reasons why. Chemistry can be confusing. So the easy route and thought to be correct, “MORE CHLORINE!!” is the typical approach by pool companies and homeowners alike; and its part of the reason we consistently see 15ppm and higher concentrations of chlorine in swimming pools. For reference, the Health Department shuts down commercial pools that are over 10ppm! The other is Range Chemistry. It’s hard not to cringe when a homeowner or even a pool technician from another company tells me about the “appropriate ranges” of various chemicals. Please know this, range based water chemistry is a lazy oversimplification of water chemistry. A pool can have corrosive water literally all year round and have “perfect” range based chemical concentrations. I hope that’s a shocking realization!
