There’s A Flood In My Basement! What Should I Do Next? We understand how stressful it can be to discover water in your basement. Don't worry; we're here to guide you through the steps to handle the situation effectively. 1. Turn off the electricity: Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. If your circuit panel is located in the basement, call the power company to turn off your electricity. 2. Rent a gasoline-powered water pump: Consider renting a gasoline-powered water pump with intake and outflow hoses. 3. Remove the wet and waterlogged items: Be prepared to part ways with waterlogged furniture, carpets, or other flooring that cannot be restored. 4. Use a wet-dry vacuum: Once it's safe to use electricity, get your hands on a wet-dry vacuum to clean up any remaining water. 5. Increase airflow: Open windows and set up industrial fans to boost airflow in your basement, promoting faster drying. 6. Invest in a dehumidifier: You can set up a hose from the dehumidifier to a basement drain or empty the water collection container regularly. 7. Sterilize and deodorize the space: Prevent mold and mildew growth by using appropriate chemicals and materials.
