How to install driveway pavers by Old Colony Masons. Not all pavers can be used for vehicular applications. Most driveway & parking lot pavers are 8mm thick. Walkway or patio pavers are usually 6mm. The ideal size driveway or parking lot paver should be small. IE: 4" x 8", 6" x 6" or 6" x 9". Sabago pavers by Genest is a great universal 3 piece set. (see picture above) The most important phase of a driveway paver installation is the subgrade. It is imperative to install a deep & solid subgrade base support system with proper drainage. Below is a few simple steps to ensure a professional Installation. 1) Remove existing driveway & excavate no less than 12" deep. 2) Install 4" of highly compacted 3/4" crushed stone. Be sure to compact in 2" increments. A mini steam roller is helpful. 3) Install a solid base using 5" of dense grade pack. The very best pack is made with 3/4" stone mixed 50/50 with bluestone dust. Spend the extra money on high quality dense grade. This type pack is not sold at all masonry suppliers. Look for a dark gray colored dense grade, it compacts like cement & should also be installed in 2" increments. Wet each 2" course during compaction. 4) Lay out a product called SS5 STABILIZATION. SS5 will keep your pavers from sinking & it doubles as the best weed barrier money can buy. 5) Install 1" paver sand to grade & level your pavers. 6) Install paver edging. 7) Fill joints with polymeric sand & set with a vibrating compactor.
