Overview: Basement Waterproofing Contractors
This work deals with water arriving from outside the house rather than out of a pipe. The signs are familiar. A damp line along the bottom of a block wall. A puddle in the same corner after every heavy rain, white crusty deposits on the concrete, a musty smell in the stairwell, or a crawl space where the ground feels wet in July.
Good contractors start outside and cheap. Gutters that dump beside the wall, downspouts with no extension, soil graded back toward the house and window wells with no drainage cause more wet basements than failed foundations do. Only after that does the conversation move to the real work. That is an interior perimeter drain feeding a sealed sump pit, exterior excavation and a membrane on the wall, crack injection on poured concrete, or a sealed liner and a dehumidifier in a crawl space.
Two warnings worth keeping. A company that quotes an interior system without ever looking at your roof drainage is selling a product, not a diagnosis. And if a wall is bowing, cracking horizontally or shifting, that is a structural question for an engineer who is not selling the repair.

Frequently asked questions
Why is water getting into my basement?
Usually because it is being delivered there. Roof water lands beside the foundation, soil slopes inward, a window well fills, or the soil stays saturated long enough for hydrostatic pressure to push through a crack or the joint where the wall meets the floor. Track when it happens. Water only after heavy rain points outside; water that appears in dry weather points at groundwater or a leaking line.
Should the fix go outside or inside?
Outside keeps water out of the structure and means digging around the foundation, which is disruptive and costs more. Inside manages water that has already arrived, routing it to a sump and out. Interior systems work and are what most homes get. Either way, the grading and downspouts have to be sorted first, because no system indoors keeps up with a roof pouring against the wall.
What makes a sump pump setup reliable?
A pit deep enough to hold water below the slab, a sealed lid, a check valve so water does not run back, and a discharge line that exits well away from the wall rather than beside it. Power is the weak point: the storm that floods the basement is the storm that cuts the electricity, so a battery backup or a water-powered backup earns its place.
Is white powder on the wall a problem?
It is efflorescence: salts left behind as water passes through masonry and evaporates. The powder itself is harmless and brushes off. What it tells you matters, because it proves moisture is moving through that wall, and it marks how high the water has been. Scrubbing it away without fixing the source just gives you a clean wall that does it again.
Who should look at a crack in the foundation?
A narrow vertical crack in poured concrete is common and usually a leak to seal rather than a structural fault. Horizontal cracks, stair-step cracking in block, walls that bow inward or doors that suddenly stick are different, and they call for a structural engineer you pay directly. An opinion from someone who also sells the repair is not an independent opinion.
