What is a Chimney Cap?

What is a Chimney Crown?

You might be able to guess what a chimney crown is by it's name. It is the top portion of the chimney that sits on the chimney like a "crown". A chimney crown can also be called a chimney wash. The chimney crown is very important for keeping out the elements. After continuous rain, the mortar in the upper portion of the chimney can deteriorate if their is not a well-structured crown to protect it..

How Do I Know If My Chimney Has a Good Crown?

The chimney crown should extend out past the edge of the chimney at least 2 inches. The chimney crown should also have a lip that deflects the rain away from the chimney.

What is Creosote?

When wood burns, substance such as smoke, gases, wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, etc. leave the chimney. When they move from the bottom of the warm chimney and reach cooler air, they begin to condense. Creosote is a thick, tar-like goo that is left sticking to the walls of the chimney when these substance condense.

Which is better gas log fireplaces or wood burning fireplaces?

The answer depends on what you like and need most. Wood burning fireplaces generally have better ambiance and lower fuel costs while gas logs are easier to use and maintain.
