It’s fire season in Montana! Hot temperatures and afternoons thunderstorms have led to an increase in fires across the state and in Big Sky. On Thursday and Friday, A-Shift responded to two separate lightning caused fires. The first was in the Karst area of the Canyon. Our crews hiked in and were able to put handline in and extinguish the fire quickly since the grass was still green and not carrying much fire. The second was a single tree lighting strike in the Spanish Peaks area in a residential neighborhood. Crews were able to extinguish any visible fire but the large tree was still burning on the inside and close to a home which required a special sawyer from the USFS to take down. On top of these fires, there have also been two fires in the Stormcastle area that were extinguished by the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Don’t let the green grass fool you. Vegetation in the area will still burn in these hot temperatures. Big thanks to the community for spotting these fires and calling them in quickly so our crews could keep them small.
