Why should I not add coolant to my system without checking for a leak or repairing an existing leak?

It is illegal to release refrigerants into the atmosphere. When a leaking system has refrigerant added, it will leak out again. Some refrigerants contain chemicals that can deplete the ozone layer. Other refrigerants can be extremely harmful to the environment.

Can I just replace the outdoor unit on an older system to save money?

Unfortunately, no. Older systems use a refrigerant called R-22, generally referred to as Freon. New systems use a different refrigerant called R-410a, so these systems are not compatible.

Will a bigger system perform better?

No, a larger system that can cool your house down faster will in fact perform poorly. A unit needs to be properly sized to heat and cool your home. If a unit is oversized, it has a higher utility cost to operate. It will shorten the lifespan of the equipment and will not allow the unit to dehumidify your home properly.
