Winterizing the Sprinkler System The following steps will help you reduce the chances of freeze damage to your irrigation pipes and backflow (PVB) and prevent your irrigation pipes from bursting. Be sure to inspect your system when turning on the water for any possible leaks or damages that may have resulted from freezing temperatures. Following all possible precautions does help reduce the risk of damages but does not eliminate all possible freeze damages that may be incurred. 1 - Turn the main shut off valve 90° to the off position (if your system has one). It is usually located above ground on the backflow supply pipe and it’s either blue or red. If the valve is in the ground, it will be in the vicinity of your water meter inside a circular green cover that is approximately 6” in diameter. If a main shut off valve is not present, turn the supply side ball valve of your PVB 90° to the off position. 2 - Open the water release valves (PVB Test Cocks) on the backflow by turning them 90° to allow water to drain out of the irrigation system and backflow, (you will need a flat head screwdriver). 3 - Close the ball valves at the backflow device by turning them 90° to allow any water between the backflow supply and irrigation valves to be drained. 4 - Run all irrigation zones to allow pressure to leave the system. 5 - Once the water has finished draining, leave the backflow ball valves and water release valves on a 45° angle while the main shut off valve remains completely shut off...
