Don't ignore the following signs: Strange noises -- Your hot water tank should operate silently. If you are hearing rumbling or popping sounds, you tank is struggling to heat water around a buildup of sediment that has hardened at the bottom of the tank, making it prone to a cracking. Water puddles around the tank -- While those drips could be a from a loose connection or a leaky valve, they also could be a sign the tank has corroded, and water is leaking through the cracks. Cloudy water -- Your hot water should come out as clear as your cold. If your water is cloudy or has a metallic odor, it could indicate rusty pipes or corrosion inside the tank. In general, sump pumps that begin to run less frequently, run constantly, seem to jam more often, or have visible corrosion should be replaced. Studies of gas lines, both commercial and residential, have not set an exact life expectancy. Gas lines that are damaged by roots or construction may fail quickly, while other gas lines have lasted decades without need for replacement. In general, many communities will go about replacing gas lines that are anywhere from 10 to 20 years old, while residential lines will frequently provide 30 years or more of service.
